Big Bad

India Ink on cold-pressed watercolor paper.
14” x 26”

I woke from a sound sleep and quickly scribbled the beginnings of Big Bad in my sketch book. I can’t remember the dream out of which it crawled, but the image stuck with me. The dark forest. The menacing figure, almost comical if not for that damned knife.

I love the faerie tale feel of this one, broken by its dark edge and how the figure is made all the more menacing because it is so obviously a man in a costume. The big bad wolf has gotten a bad rap when the most dangerous animal is always man. I’m not sure where the owl came from. Maybe the wolf thing represents my more primal and dangerous nature while the owl represents that small bit of intellect keeping it in check. I don’t know. Maybe that’s a load of crap.
